Apprentice Program

Overview of Komatsu's Apprentice Program

Komatsu’s Apprentice Development System (ADS) is a highly innovative and comprehensive approach to apprenticeship training that has set new national standards in the industry. The program has benefited over 715 apprentices and trainees since its inception in 2009 and has earned widespread recognition and accolades, including the 2022 Winner NSW Large Employer of the Year, Silver for 2022 Large Employer of the Year, and Silver for employing Australian Apprentices at the National Training Awards.

The ADS program has demonstrated its effectiveness in preparing apprentices for the industry, with customer-facing individuals trained under the program approximately one year ahead of conventionally trained apprentices. This success can be attributed to the program’s commitment to providing apprentices with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their careers, including technical skills development and life skills necessary for personal growth and success.

The program covers a wide range of areas, including mental health awareness, public speaking, road safety and fatigue management, drug and alcohol awareness, and various business skill sets. In addition to the comprehensive training provided through the ADS program, Komatsu has developed a structured training program to enhance the skills and knowledge of its apprentices.

The ADS system involves roughly 12 weeks of structured training per year, including three weeks of internal ADS training (two weeks technical, one week safety or business skills), eight weeks of TAFE/accredited training, and one week for inductions. To ensure that apprentices remain up-to-date with their training needs, they are required to participate in on-the-job and external training and submit monthly progress reports, which are signed by their immediate supervisors and submitted to their Technical Capability Manager.

Komatsu’s commitment to the training and development of its apprentices is evident through the program’s comprehensive approach to training and development. Fourth-year apprentices receive exposure to career development and planning, where they can establish a well-defined plan in cooperation with their managers outlining their professional aspirations and how to achieve them.

Overall, Komatsu’s ADS program is a trailblazer in the industry, setting new standards for apprenticeship training. With its commitment to developing well-rounded and successful apprentices and trainees, the program is equipping its apprentices with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their careers and beyond.
